ATHLETES AND QUALIFICATION

The APP World Tour brings the World's very best athletes to the some of the World's most iconic and high profile Cities for a spectacle like no other, while embracing participation at every level through its @citypaddlefestival approach and providing a unique access point to the World Championship Tour platform for aspiring athletes.

The APP World Tour season kicks off in July and runs through to December with six high profile events across the globe challenging the World’s best athletes in a complete spectrum of different conditions to determine the 2018 Overall, Racing and Surfing World Champions for both Men & Women. The Tour consists of two principle disciplines:

  1. Racing

  2. Surfing

RACING

Overview:

In 2018, the Racing discipline will feature flagship events in London, New York City, San Francisco and Paris, together with a points contributing event in S. California (Pacific Paddle Games) completing the line up for the 2018 APP World Tour Racing Season. Each event will feature the two primary APP World Tour Racing formats (except for the ‘Wildcard event’ Red Bull Heavy Water that will remain a single long distance race and an additional mid distance (4.5km) race in London). These formats are as follows:

  1. Long Distance (10 – 13km)

  2. Sprint / Technical Race (London, NYC and Paris will feature the signature APP Sprint Racing heat elimination format, while PPG will deliver a slightly longer, technical race format)

Each event (except San Francisco) will feature the following Racing Divisions:

  1. Pro: The Top 32 Men and Top 16 Women will compete at the World Championship Tour Level

  2. Pro-Am: Open Entry

  3. Amateur: Open Entry (see: www.citypaddlefestivals.com)

  4. Youth: Open Entry (see: www.citypaddlefestivals.com)

  5. Entry Level: Open Entry (see: www.citypaddlefestivals.com)

Qualification:

The Top 24 Men and Top 8 Women from the 2017 APP World Championship Tour will automatically qualify for the 2018 Season, leaving 8 spots open to both Men & Women for up and coming talent, as well as established professionals worthy of a start in the Main Event.

The Top 24 Men and Top 8 Women will have up until 30 days prior to each event to confirm their attendance in each event, after which, their spot will be given to the next ranked individual to take their spot. Anyone outside of the Top 24 Men and Top 8 Women is able to apply for a wildcard into the Main event, with a shortlist to be submitted to the APP World Tour Athlete Committee for final selection and approval 30 days prior to the event. Wildcard recipients will be notified and announced shortly thereafter. Please email entry@appworldtour.com to apply for a wildcard.

The Pro-Am division provides an ideal platform for aspiring competitors to showcase their talent on the World stage, with Top 8 finishers from each Pro-Am event automatically being placed into the consideration for forthcoming events, and stand out performances will be noticed and documented for future consideration.

The remainder of the divisions are open entry, so there are no established qualification processes other than the entry form submission online linked through from each event page. Please visit www.citypaddlefestivals.com for more on the open participation divisions.

Results calculation & Rankings:
Event Result:

  1. Champions will be crowned in each racing format with individual podium presentations. Each of those specific results will count independently towards the Overall Rankings and World Title Race

  2. Overall Event Champions will be crowned from each event through the tallying of both long distance and sprint results, with any ties being broken as follows:

  • London: the mid distance race (4.5km) from Battersea to the Houses of Parliament will be the tie-breaker

  • New York City: any tie in New York will be broken in favor of the Sprint racing result in the surf out at Long Island

  • PPG: any tie at the PPG will be broken in favor of the technical race result

  • San Francisco: is a single format race, so no tie breaker needed

  • Paris: any tie in Paris will be broken in favor of the long distance race

Official Rankings and World Title:

1. Each athlete’s long distance results from each event will be tallied with their sprint / technical race results to provide the official Overall Racing Rankings on the 2018 APP World Tour

2. There will be no discards in the 2018 season, except for the ‘Wildcard Event’, Red Bull Heavy Water:

  • Athletes will be able to discard one of their long distance results by replacing it with their Red Bull Heavy Water result

  • Likewise, athletes’ can discard their result in Red Bull Heavy Water if their other Long distance results are better

3. This means that athletes’ Top 4 Long Distance Results and Top 4 sprint / technical Results will count towards the Overall World Title in 2018

4. Any points ties will be broken in the following:

  • First: by single higher results: e.g. if athlete ‘A’ has a 2nd and a 5th and athlete ‘B’ has a 3rd and a 4th, athlete ‘A’ will finish ahead of Athlete ‘B’ – each individual result i each format will be counted in points according to the points structure below

  • If there is still a tie, it will go back to individual tie-breakers for each event: e.g. if an athlete ‘A’ has a 2nd and a 5th in long distance and sprint racing respectively, and athlete ‘B’ has a 5th in long distance and a 2nd in sprint racing, but athlete ‘B’s results were in the weighted format at the event in question (e.g. his 2nd place was in New York, or he finished better in the mid distance race in London specific to that race), then this will break the tie

  • In the unlikely event that there is still a tie for the World Championship Title, a ‘Paddle off’ will take place between the two athletes in question to be determined by the APP World Tour Race Director at the Final event

5. Overall Champions for each Individual Race Format (Distance and Sprints) from the Tour will be celebrated at the end of each season: i.e. APP Long Distance Champion & Sprint Champion. Again, Red Bull Heavy Water will be the ‘Wildcard’ event that can either replace or be replaced by another Long Distance Result for this calculation
