In the Men's competition we saw Rounds 3&4 completed, with Top seeds performing as expected in the full size conditions, advancing through to the Quarterfinals and setting up what will be a dramatic finals day.
Standouts from the top seeds in Round 3 were Wellington Reis from Brazil, whose backhand surfing was some of the most fluid and radical ever seen on this epic right hand point break, but also 2018 World Champion Sean Poynter and current World #2 Luiz Diniz.
In Round 4, it was Wellington Reis once again who posted the highest heat score total of the round, with an equally strong performance from Benoit Carpentier, who has been on stellar form this whole event.
While it was disappointing to see Matheus Salazar have to withdraw from his widely anticipated Round 3 heat with brother Leco and Benoit Carpentier from France due to sickness, Leco carried on the family pride in Round 4, with a strong peerformance to overpower an on form Mo Freitas from Hawaii and advance on into the Quarterfinals. The Women competition got underway in solid surf yesterday, with stand out performances from Fiona Wylde and Izzi Gomez, both advancing directly to Round 3. Fiona, as always, seemed incredibly comfortable in the larger surf, navigating the line up to post solid scores.
Meanwhile, arriving directly in from Maui in the morning, Izzi was forced to borrow a board for her heat, seeming slow through much of its duration, but posting a solid score in the dying minutes of the heat, and a back up in the last seconds to secure advancement.

Outside of the top seeds, it was exciting to see new faces step up to be counted here at the Gran Canaria Pro-Am and stand out through Rounds 3 & 4. In particular, the newly crowned French Champion Clement Roseyro from the Basque Country in France has been turning heads throughout the event with critical backhand surfing that has secured his berth in the quarterfinals against Poenaiki Raioha.
